Halifax General Insurance have issued a warning that multiple homeowners need to make sure that their second homes have suitable insurance cover.
They estimate that up to 25% of all homes in the UK are uninsured, with second homes being particularly vulnerable because they are often left unoccupied, leaving them at greater risk of burglary and weather damage.
Halifax offer a range of suggestions for making sure that you are fully insured. They recommend that you should check the value of the contents of your second home and make sure that your insurance covers their full value. You should also check the small-print of your policy to find out if there are any exclusions that you need to be aware of. For instance, is your second home insured if it is unoccupied?
You should also tell your insurer if you make any alterations to your home and it's recommended that you take appropriate security measures (such as installing a burglar alarm).
If you've bought a property that is outside the UK then you should check local laws and regulations to ensure that you're not leaving yourself open to any additional risks.
