Making A Budget

Making a budget is a vital part of financial planning and stability, at all stages of our lives. They may not be the most fun thing in the world to do, but they are the most effective way to make sure that you use your money the way in which you want to use it. Here is some simple advice on how to make a budget:

Firstly, you'll need to identify your current spending (expenditure). You should write down everything that you currently spend money on - many people find that it is easiest to think about your spending in a given period (maybe the average month). It's important that you're honest when carrying out this task. If you lie to yourself then you'll defeat the whole object of the exercise.

Once you've listed your current spending, take a look at the individual items on your list. Being realistic, are you over-spending in some areas? Could you possibly save money? Identify areas where you should be making savings and set yourself some targets. The targets should be helpful and also be realistic.

Finally, having made your budget, you'll need to make sure that you keep a track of your spending. You might find it easiest to do this using a spreadsheet or other computing package. Check that you're sticking to your targets and, if not, identify why that is and what you'll do to resolve the problem.
