As speculation has mounted that American tycoon Malcolm Glazer is about to launch an audacious takeover of Manchester United, fans of the Premiership club have made it clear that they do not welcome such a move.
One organisation, Shareholders United, was formed originally to fight off a previous takeover attempt from media magnate Rupert Murdoch. They've now turned their attention to Mr Glazer and have urged fellow fans to demonstrate their lack of enthusiasm for seeing the club taken over by a powerful individual.
A spokesman for the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association was keen to stress that such a takeover would prove unpopular with the average fan, who would "not want Malcolm Glazer to take over".
Football has increasingly been seen as a business, as well as purely sporting entertainment. A number of clubs have floated on the UK stock market, while some are in the hands of private benefactors. The most famous example of the latter is Chelsea - the West London club are owner by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. The Londoners finished above United in last season's Premiership.
