Malcolm Glazer Takeover of Manchester United?

Manchester United have announced that they have received a preliminary approach about the possibility of a takeover. The announcement comes about a frenzy of speculation about the likely intentions of Malcolm Glazer, the American tycoon.

Mr Glazer already holds a 19.2% share in the Premiership club and business associates have been suggesting that he may be interested in increasing that stake.

The move won't come as a surprise to some, as the multi-millionaire has a track record of getting involved in sporting organisations. In his home country he is already the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers American Football franchise. That was the team that won the Super Bowl two years ago.

Less happily for Manchester United supporters, Glazer has a reputation for looking to make a profit from sport, cutting costs where necessary. That approach has seen some recent problems for Tampa Bay, who have made a poor start to the 2004 season (losing their first four games).

United do, however, have a reputation as a well-run club, which is somewhat unusual in the rollercoaster ride that is football (or "soccer", as Mr Glazer may know it as).

United fans will be watching with interest, as there have been a number of organisations and individuals purportedly interesting in taking control. It seems that a firm offer could be on the table in the near future, although small shareholders in United have shown some towards Glazer's bid.
